Statement on Inclusion: January 31, 2016
"We the congregation of St. George's United Methodist Church in historic Old City Philadelphia celebrate God's magnificent creation, and joyously affirm that every person is created in the image of God and is therefore worthy of God's love and grace. We embrace this congregation's long heritage as the 'Cradle of American Methodism,' and so firmly stand behind the professed goal of our beloved denomination to be a church that has 'open hearts, open minds, and open doors.'
We support the full inclusion of all people into the life and ministry of the Church universal, particularly Historic St. George's United Methodist Church, without regard for sexual orientation or gender orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, age, faith history, economic status, marital status, physical and mental ability, and education. We oppose any opinion that allows discrimination of any sort without question, particularly discrimination against gay, lesbian, or transgender persons within the Church or within society. We trust in the Holy Spirit and join with others calling for prayerful and open reconsideration of those policies of the United Methodist Church that perpetuate discrimination and exclusion on the basis of sexual orientation.
St. George's United Methodist Church will extend warm fellowship to all who have known the struggle and pain of exclusion from churches. We will intentionally embrace the diversity in our neighborhood and in the world. And as a Reconciling Congregation we will demonstrate broad hospitality and a spirit of reconciliation in and through the love of Jesus Christ for all God's children. We invite all persons to join us in our faith journey toward greater love, understanding, and mutual respect."
